Introduction
The Good Deeds Charity Group unites friends, colleagues and other like minded individuals who wish to empower underprivileged scholars by giving them access to tools we had and that our kids enjoy, that will allow them to excel at school and study further. This will benefit them for future employment. Through our good deeds they will prosper and be able to fend for themselves and their families.
Background
The UCT Medical School Class of 1993 formed a WhatsApp chat group in the months leading up to our 25th year graduation anniversary – we are spread out all over the world. We mourned together the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi. He was special to us all having been taught by or worked with him at some point in our careers. The tragedy affected us all.
It was at this stage that a recent conversation I had with the principal of Hanover Park Primary School, whose daughter was in my care, ignited a thought that became a dream and then a reality. He lamented about the absence of a library at his Primary school. No reading books for the kids- shocking and sad.
The idea of the Bongani Mayosi Library was born and as a group, we dug deep to fund and coordinate this with our willing partners Breadline RSA, The Bookery and Cape Winds Construction working hand in hand to make this dream a reality.
It has now become the goal of the Good Deed Charity Group NPO, in association with Breadline RSA, The Bookery, Cape Winds Construction and some private donors to pursue the provision of reading material and computers to schools in underprivileged areas.
We intend to name the projects after past and present teachers who have made us what we are today. The librarians need to be paid and this is an ongoing cost. Company fees and auditing fees are the only other expenses.
